Licensed vocational nurses, nurse aids and medical technologists are not utilized as their scope of practices and their clinical experience does not allow them to review analyze or interpret the content within medical records. The professional registered nurse is the only entity within the nursing profession, whose scope of practice allows her/him to review, analyze and interpret the content of medical records; licensed vocational nurses and nurse aids scope of practice does not allow either to analyze the content of medical records.

The professional registered nurse subcontractor for LNC of So Cal has at least four years of experience of bedside nursing. This experience provides the professional registered nurse the ability to decipher illegible handwriting, analyze the significance of diagnostic studies compared with the underlying medical conditions and most importantly determine which records are missing.

The professional registered nurse also understands and is knowledgeable in the makeup of the medical records. She/he knows the various sections of the chart and can determine whether or not any of the records may be missing. From here, the professional registered nurse then employs her/his years of nursing experience and knowledge of pathophysiology and anatomy to analyze the "bottom line" of the medical records content, assessing the possible injury/damages, and giving the attorney the strengths and weaknesses of the case.
